Emotion-focused communication can improve care delivery for long-term care recipients, especially those living with dementia. This article describes the translation of the Emotion-Focused Communication Training (EFCT) for staff from an in-person workshop to an online program. The online course was developed using the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) Model. Pre- and post-training comparisons from 247 caregivers across long-term care showed a significant increase in level of knowledge of emotion-focused communication, as well as confidence in applying such knowledge and skills to care (increased self-efficacy). Participants also reported high levels of program acceptability. Overall, findings indicate the benefits of translating an in-person training opportunity for caregivers into an interactive online experience.
