Engaging Family and Friends to Assess Preferences
A preference interview is the foundation of person-centered care planning, but what if an individual is unable to communicate their preferences? This 36-minute video shows how to engage family or friends to assess preferences using the Preferences for Everyday Living Inventory (PELI). This training video highlights how to conduct a PELI interview with a family member (proxy), tips to help you guide the conversation when the proxy may be inserting what THEY prefer instead of the resident’s preferences, and strategies staff can use to serve as proxies when no family or close friends are available. A training guide accompanies the video and is available for free download. The video and guide can be used to train current staff and volunteers as well as those new to your organization.
